How a cushion looks in person
Cushions show large, bold flashes of light, sometimes called a chunky look, or a finer crushed ice sparkle, depending on how the facets were cut. The difference is hard to see in photos and obvious in the hand. Many people come in sure they want one style and leave with the other. That is why we bring a few to the tray and let you look.
The rounded corners make a cushion comfortable to wear and less likely to chip than a princess cut. It sits nicely next to most wedding bands.
Square or elongated cushion
As a rough guide:
- About 1.00 to 1.08: a square cushion, soft and classic.
- About 1.15 to 1.30: a gently elongated cushion.
- About 1.30 and up: a long elongated cushion, a popular choice that looks like a softer radiant.
Cushions are often cut with extra depth, so they can look smaller face up than an oval of the same weight. Ask us for the millimeter measurements; they tell you the real size on the hand better than carats.
Settings and pairings
A four prong solitaire keeps it simple and lets the outline show. A cushion inside a halo is a classic look that makes the center read larger. A hidden halo keeps the clean face and adds sparkle from the side.
If you like the elongated cushion, compare it with a radiant cut and an oval on the same visit. All three sit close together and each catches light in its own way.
Color and clarity
Cushions can hold a little more color than rounds, so many people choose G or better in white metals and go a little lower in yellow gold. VS clarity is usually clean to the eye. The 4Cs guide explains why.
Tell us the ratio and look you prefer on the stone request page, and we will have three to five cushions ready. Then book a viewing at 30 West 47th Street and compare them by the window.
Asked at the showroom
What is an elongated cushion?
An elongated cushion is a cushion cut with a longer outline, often about 1.30 or more as a ratio. It looks like a softer radiant and makes the finger look longer. It is one of the most requested cushion styles.
Chunky or crushed ice: which cushion look is better?
Neither is better. Chunky cushions show large, bold flashes, crushed ice cushions show fine, glittery sparkle. The difference is easy to see in the hand, so we bring both to the tray.
Are cushion cuts durable?
Yes. The rounded corners make cushions less likely to chip than shapes with sharp corners, and they wear comfortably every day.
