Why a marquise looks so big
A marquise spreads its weight along a long, narrow outline. Face up, a 1 carat marquise can measure longer than a 1.5 carat round. It also makes fingers look slimmer, which is part of why the shape keeps coming back.
Like an oval or pear, a marquise has a bow tie: a darker band across the middle. Some are bold, some barely show. You cannot judge it well from a photo, so we put several stones on the tray and let you compare them under the loupe and in daylight by the window.
Ratios and symmetry to ask for
As a rough guide, a ratio of about 1.85 to 2.10 gives the classic marquise look. Shorter stones look fuller and softer. Longer ones look dramatic and slim. There is no right answer, only the one you like on your hand.
Symmetry matters more on a marquise than on most shapes. Fold it in half in your mind, end to end and side to side: both halves should match, and the two tips should line up. A stone that leans to one side is easy to spot once it is set.
Protecting the tips
The two points are the delicate part. Choose a setting with V shaped prongs or a bezel at each tip so the points are covered. That one detail protects the stone from knocks for years of daily wear.
A slim solitaire keeps the vintage look. A marquise set east west, across the finger, looks modern and sits low. A marquise also works well in a toi et moi pair or with small side stones in a three stone ring. If you like the pointed outline but want one rounded end, look at pear shaped rings.
Color, clarity and the report
Marquise stones can show a little color at the tips, so G or H is a common choice in white gold or platinum. In yellow gold you can usually go lower. Clarity in the VS or clean SI range is often eye clean thanks to the sparkle. Every marquise we offer has an IGI or GIA report; our IGI report guide shows what each line means.

Asked at the showroom
Are marquise diamonds fragile?
The two tips are the delicate part. A setting with V shaped prongs or a bezel at each point protects them well for daily wear. We show you the tip prongs on every marquise setting at the showroom.
What ratio is best for a marquise?
As a rough guide, about 1.85 to 2.10 gives the classic look. Shorter stones look fuller and softer, longer ones look slim and dramatic. It comes down to what you like on your hand.
Why does symmetry matter so much on a marquise?
A marquise has two tips that should line up and two halves that should match. Small differences are easy to see once the stone is set, so we compare a few stones side by side before you choose.
